Gap Takes Web Sites Down for Overhaul

Two of Gap Inc.'s e-commerce sites -- OldNavy.com and Gap.com -- were down yesterday while the company gives them an overhaul.

The sites reportedly have been down for a week, and there is no word on when they will be ready for business. Visitors to the sites can leave their e-mail address if they wish to be informed when the sites are operative again.

The Banana Republic Web site also was closed for business two days last week. However, it now showcases many of the new features that will appear on the redesigned Old Navy and Gap Web sites, a Gap spokesperson said yesterday. The changes were made in response to customer feedback, according to a message on the Banana Republic site.

Two new pop-up windows appear designed to decrease the need for visitors to click between pages during the shopping process. QuickLook, for example, lets a shopper move a cursor over one specific item on a page featuring multiple items in order to see information such as available sizes and colors. Shoppers also can order an item from this window. Another pop-up window displays what's been added to a visitor's shopping bag without the shopper having to leave her place on the site.

Other new features include the ability to see an item as part of an entire outfit, pictures of ordered items on the checkout page and the ability to save items for a future visit. The site also promises several improvements, including that it will remove a style, size or color as soon as it is out of stock and the ability to redeem two gift cards in a single order.

Several other features will be added in the months to come. These include a function that lets shoppers see only the styles available in their selected size and an order status tool that will let customers know where their order is at all times.
