FTC Unveils No-Call List Today at White House

The Federal Trade Commission launches the national telemarketing no-call registry at a press-only ceremony with President Bush in the Rose Garden of the White House at 8:30 a.m. today.

Internet registration for the list begins today. Telephone registration for consumers located west of the Mississippi River, including Louisiana and Minnesota, also begins today. The rest of the country will be able to register over the telephone beginning July 7.

FTC officials have said that before the end of the month they would announce the free Web site and toll-free number consumers would use to register for the no-call list. About 60 million households are expected to register, according to the FTC.

The FTC has eschewed a paid-advertising campaign to promote the registry, opting instead to use media coverage to educate the public about the list. Yesterday afternoon, the FTC held a closed-door meeting with Washington reporters to brief them about the list in advance of the ceremony.
