FTC Educates Miami Residents About Telephone Fraud

The Federal Trade Commission and the Miami Dade Transit Authority are educating residents in Dade County, FL on how to recognize a telemarketing scam by displaying public service messages in 600 Miami buses and 150 trains in English and Spanish . In addition to the public display ads 10,000 English and Spanish bookmarks will be distributed at 21 metro stations throughout Miami.


The display includes the phone number and web address for the FTC, where information on spotting telemarketing scams will be available. The information includes material for educators, companies and community organizations.


"Consumers will see the messages all day, whether they are on the way to work or a ball game," said Jodie Bernstein, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "Mass transit is a terrific way to give consumers the information they need to avoid a massive fraud."


According to Bernstein, telemarketing fraud costs consumers as much as $40 billion a year.
