FedEx Ground will relocate to a new 38,000-square-foot local terminal in Augusta, GA, from its 2,300-square-foot operation in North Augusta, SC, with completion set for August.

The larger terminal will house more than 70 employees and independent contractors within three years.

The Augusta relocation is part of the company's $1.8 billion network expansion. The investment calls for adding nine new hubs and expanding 30 existing ones as well as relocating or expanding more than 290 pickup and delivery terminals by the end of fiscal year 2010.

The nationwide expansion will nearly double the company's average daily hub volume capacity from 2.6 million to 5.1 million packages. In the past year, FedEx Ground began construction on new hubs in the metro areas of Cincinnati; Dallas; Memphis, TN; and Hagerstown, MD.

The Augusta facility will provide pickup and delivery services to Columbia, Richmond, Greene, Wilkes, Warren, McDuffie, Taliaferro, Lincoln, Glascock and Burke counties in Georgia, and to Aiken, McCormick, Edgefield, Barnwell and Allendale counties in South Carolina.
