FedEx Ground Opens Tampa Operations

FedEx Ground, Pittsburgh, an operating company of FedEx Corp., opened its latest fully automated terminal in Tampa, FL, yesterday.

Tampa is the company's eighth automated terminal and is part of a $1.8 billion network expansion. The investment calls for adding nine hubs and expanding 30 existing hubs, as well as relocating or expanding more than 290 pickup and delivery terminals by the end of fiscal year 2010.

The new 170,000 square-foot facility is a consolidation of previous FedEx Ground operations in Tampa and St. Petersburg that, combined, totaled 95,000 square feet. The expanded terminal can process 10,000 packages per hour and is equipped with advanced package-sortation technology.

With the opening of this facility, local customers will be able to take advantage of expanded overnight ground service to destinations within 400 miles.

In the past year, FedEx Ground has begun construction on hubs in the metro areas of Cincinnati; Dallas; Memphis, TN; and Hagerstown, MD.

The Tampa facility has more than 250 employees and independent contractors.
