Facebook has given its users the ability to turn off its controversial new ad service, Beacon. The service, which broadcast purchases made on affiliated Web sites by Facebook users to their friends on the social network, was criticized for being invasive, ruining holiday surprises and potentially being illegal in New York under that state's privacy laws. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized for what he said were “a lot of mistakes” the site made, both in the feature's development and its rollout, in a post on the site's blog.
