Equity Fund Acquires Paula Young, Other Catalogs

Specialty Catalog Corp., a multichannel marketer of women's wigs under brand names such as Paula Young and Especially Yours, has been sold to a Toronto-based private equity fund. The announcement was made yesterday by Goldsmith Agio Helms, the investment bank handling the sale.


The deal with EdgeStone Capital Partners "will provide us with access to capital that will enable us to grow and expand our market share at a most opportune time," Joseph Grabowski, CEO of Specialty Catalog, said in a statement.


The business is entering a new phase of growth as maturing baby boomers enter the core demographic for wigs, hairpieces and related products, he said.


Specialty Catalog distributes its products through catalogs, online, salons and select retail outlets in the United States and United Kingdom. In the UK, the company markets its products under the names Natural Image, Jacqueline, Paula Young and HotHair.
