Inbox Insider: Nonprofits tap the season for giving via e-mail

This holiday season, nonprofits have been working hard to help raise money for their causes — and using e-mail to do so.

Doctors Without Borders, the nonprofit that brings medical attention to all reaches of the planet, sent out an e-mail this holiday season with the call to action, “This year say ‘No Thanks' to traditional holiday presents,” which encouraged recipients to sign up to receive the gift of donations on their behalf.

Interested parties could create a holiday style wish list e-mail to send out to friends and family members at https://www.firstgiving.com/doctorswithoutbordersholiday, instead of receiving presents under the tree.

Doctors Without Borders is not alone in looking to harness the spirit of giving for a good cause. The American Cancer Society teamed up with United Airlines to send co-branded e-mails to United's frequent fliers, soliciting both money and miles. Recipients have the choice to donate money or extra miles in exchange for sending teddy bears to children in the hospital suffering with cancer.

The American Red Cross promoted its line of preparedness products as Christmas gifts, including track jackets and LED glowsticks, through its holiday e-mails with the tag line, “Give the gift of preparedness.”

E-mail is not just for holiday discounts this season, it's for gifts that count.
