Hoax E-Mail Trial Starts Nov. 24

Two men implicated in South Africa's National Intelligence Agency hoax e-mail saga will go on trial Nov. 24 in the Pretoria Commercial Crime Court.

Software salesman Muziwendoda Kunene, and Funokwakhe Madladla, the National Intelligence Agency's manager for electronic surveillance, are accused by the NIA of fraud through sending hoax e-mails.

Mr. Kunene was contracted by the NIA to intercept e-mails and other electronic communication. In this position he gave several documents he claimed were intercepted e-mails and electronic communications to Mr. Madladla.

It was later found the NIA that these documents were fabricated and did not originate from the parties who were supposed to have written them. These e-mails implicated senior African National Congress members in a conspiracy against the ANC's deputy president, Jacob Zuma, and secretary-general Kgalema Motlanthe, according to the NIA.
