The Direct Marketing Association Nonprofit Federation has named Easter Seals its 2002 Nonprofit Organization of the Year. The award will be presented Aug. 14 during the DMA's New York Nonprofit Conference at The Waldorf Astoria.

"Despite the current economic and political climate, Easter Seals has successfully applied strategic direct response marketing techniques in both donor acquisition and cultivation programs to raise funds and support for their activities," said Kory Christianson, chairman of the DMA Nonprofit Federation's Advisory Council and director of development, St. Joseph's Indian School, Chamberlain, SD. "This success has enabled them to fulfill their mission of transforming the lives of those in need of help."

Easter Seals president/CEO James E. Williams will accept the award on the organization's behalf.

Easter Seals has operated for more than 80 years, assisting children and adults with disabilities. It provides services such as medical rehabilitation, job training and employment, child care, adult day services and camping and recreation that benefit more than 1 million individuals and families yearly through 450 centers nationwide.

To be eligible for the nonprofit award, organizations must show successful direct response marketing techniques; outstanding financial performance; ethical nonprofit standards; accepted standards for management and public disclosure; and a strong reputation in the nonprofit and direct marketing fields as well as with the public.

The nonprofit conference runs Aug. 13-14. It will feature keynote speakers and sessions on topics such as strategy development, integrated fundraising, creative case histories, new media and formats, 21st-century metrics, fundraising in the changing world climate since 9/11, telemarketing, lapsed donors and international strategies.
