EarthLink Buys OmniSky, Customer List

EarthLink will buy the assets of OmniSky Corp., a data-services provider for wireless devices, along with the company's customer list of 32,000, the Internet service provider said Friday.

The purchase, valued at $5 million, is subject to the approval of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco.

OmniSky, San Francisco, began the search for a buyer in October. OmniSky, which has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, will continue to operate and serve its present customers through the sales process.

The purchase of OmniSky will advance the ISP's efforts to expand in the wireless market, said Lance Weatherby, executive vice president of EarthLink's "EarthLink Everywhere" initiative.

The deal lets EarthLink, Atlanta, expand its offering to non-PC users of the Internet.
