Small, locally owned businesses rang registers to the tune of nearly $6 billion on Small Business Saturday.

Consumers who knew that the day after Black Friday was Small Business Saturday spent an estimated $5.7 billion with independent merchants on the day, a nearly 4% increase over last year, according to a survey conducted by the National Federation of Independent Business and American Express.

Awareness of the retail event sandwiched between Black Friday and CyberMonday rose by 4 percentage points over 2012 to 71% of the population. “In just four years the nation has adopted Small Business Saturday and made it part of the holiday shopping tradition,” says Susan Sobbott, president of American Express OPEN, a card aimed at small business owners.

Besides American Express, this year's Small Business Saturday sponsors included the U.S. Postal Service, Federal Express, Twitter, and Foursquare. Organizers claimed that 325,000 tweets were sent during November to support the day.
