DRTV Computer Firm Hit With Fraud Charges

Pennsylvania Attorney General Mike Fisher filed a lawsuit this month accusing direct marketer Computer Personalities Systems Inc. and company president George Capell of fraudulent and deceptive business practices.

Computer Personalities Systems, Gardenville, PA, advertised its computer system online and through nationally broadcast infomercials in 1999 and 2000.

The suit was filed in response to roughly 140 complaints made by Pennsylvania consumers to Fisher's Bureau of Consumer Protection. It seeks full restitution for consumers, civil penalties, and a permanent ban from engaging in fraudulent and deceptive business practices.

Consumers complained they did not receive products within the time period required by federal law and did not receive the required delay notice that informs buyers they may cancel orders and receive a refund, investigators said.

The lawsuit also charges that the company began the 30-day return period before orders were delivered; failed to provide sufficient information and documents to return items; and did not honor rebates, warranties and guaranties.
