Draftfcb Chicago sweeps Tempo Awards

Draftfcb Chicago swept the Chicago Association of Direct Marketing's 36th annual Tempo Awards this month, taking home the Past President's Award, the Best in Show and nearly one-third of all prizes handed out.

The agency won Best in Show for "Blue Ribbon Ball 2006," a dimensional mailing for the Prevent Child Abuse America Chicago Board.

That entry also won first place for creative achievement and third place for marketing results in the dimensional mailings category. And it won the most prestigious Past Presidents' Award for the same campaign.

Overall, Draftfcb won 35 of the 113 Tempo awards presented at Chicago's Café Brauer, including 11 for first place.

"We've always had a very strong showing from the larger agencies, as seen from Draftfcb's performance," said Scott Reeves, account director at DoubleClick Inc., CADM secretary/treasurer and head of Tempo judging.

"The last couple of years we've seen a better balance of larger and smaller agencies, but this year the bigger agencies are a bit stronger, back where they were," he said. "I also noticed stronger entries overall in the interactive categories as well as catalogs."

That said, smaller shops did win some prestigious prizes. Fathom Communications was given the sixth annual Jay Gondelman Award for Innovative Achievement in Electronic Direct Marketing. Its "International CXT Promotional Web site" entry in the Web sites category also bagged first place for marketing results and third place for creative achievement.

Meredith Integrated Marketing won the second annual Hispanic Marketing Award for "Disfrutalo," an eight-page magazine with lifestyle content and coupon offers for PepsiCo brands. The entry won first place for marketing results in the other media category.

The Marketing Store, second to Draftfcb in the number of awards it took, won 18 Tempos. Euro RSCG Chicago and Rodgers Townsend, St. Louis, each won 13 awards.

All 110 first-, second- and third-place Tempo winners were judged separately in 16 categories for work produced between Oct. 1, 2005 and Dec. 31, 2006.
