Donnelley Wins $400 Million Phone Directory Contract

Chicago printing giant R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. won a $400 million multiyear contract to print and produce all current telephone directories from R.H. Donnelley Corp.

The deal extends R.R. Donnelley's 15-year relationship with R.H. Donnelley, which publishes directories under the Sprint Yellow Pages and SBC Yellow Pages brands. Nearly 28 million directories are distributed, carrying ads of 260,000 local and national advertisers.

R.R. Donnelley's U.S. directory plants will print the R.H. Donnelley books to cut distribution costs and time to market. R.H. Donnelley is headquartered in Cary, NC.

The win was made public a day after R.R. Donnelley said it had extended its 20-year relationship with retail trade journal publisher Lebhar-Friedman Inc., New York. R.R. Donnelley will print virtually all Lebhar-Friedman business-to-business and consumer magazine retail and food service titles.

Valued at nearly $25 million, the multiyear contract includes file processing, print production and distribution of titles such as Chain Store Age, Drug Store News, DSN Retailing Today, Nation's Restaurant News and Home Channel News.

Also, R.R. Donnelley on May 2 also extended its relationship with Penton Media Inc. through a new multiyear contract to print and produce nearly 50 magazine titles in 12 BTB verticals. The contract, worth more than $60 million, gives R.R. Donnelley printing responsibilities for all Penton titles. The award includes printing of titles not previously produced by R.R. Donnelley.

Penton's books will be printed in several R.R. Donnelley magazine plants specializing in short-run publications. The printer's logistics services distribution optimization team also will work on methods to cut Penton's distribution costs.

Penton, Cleveland, publishes titles such as Air Transport World, Expansion Management, Food Management, IndustryWeek, Contracting Business, Hydraulics & Pneumatics and WindowsITPro Europe.
