DMA UK: Corporate TPS Draws Small Businesses

Most companies registering on the Corporate Telephone Preference Service are small businesses, the Direct Marketing Association (UK) said yesterday.


The service debuted June 25, letting businesses in the United Kingdom opt out of sales or marketing telephone calls.


Adding a business component for the TPS amended Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, a European Commission directive stating that it is unlawful for a company to make a sales or marketing telephone call to individuals who indicated they did not want to receive such calls.


The change was prompted by small businesses saying they are unable to manage direct marketing calls.


The DMA UK yesterday produced findings from the first research conducted into the CTPS. The DMA UK said 275,000 numbers are registered, and of the registrants surveyed, 54 percent were from companies that had one to nine employees. Companies with 10 to 49 employees accounted for 29 percent of registrants.


Also, 76 percent of companies are registering one or two numbers. And those that had registered are unsympathetic to using the telephone as a sales and marketing channel, with only 15 percent of them using the telephone to make such calls.


The research was conducted online and e-mailed to a random selection of CTPS registrants. More than 1,000 people responded to the survey.
