DMA List Council Holds First Teleconference

The Direct Marketing Association's List and Database Council took a new approach to its operating committee meeting yesterday with its first-ever open council meeting conducted via teleconference.

The open council meetings typically occur during conferences such as the council's annual List Vision conference in New York, DM Days or the DMA Annual show in the fall. However, the council wanted to try something new this year.

"The most pressing reason that we had for deciding to do a teleconference was because everybody is really busy at a show," Linda Huntoon, committee chair and executive vice president of Direct Media Inc., said in an interview before the teleconference.

The other reason was so that people outside the New York metropolitan area could attend though they may not be in town for a show.

Huntoon started the call by explaining the purpose of the List and Database Council and urging attendees to join the council and to offer feedback on the teleconference.

"The council is only as good as its membership, and we hope you join us," she said.

A legislative update on postal reform was provided by Ed Gleiman, former chairman of the Postal Rate Commission and consultant to the DMA. It was followed by an update on a fax bill by Jim Conway, vice president of government relations at the DMA.

After committee members introduced themselves and explained what they do on the operating committee, they discussed how potential council members can get involved.

Operating committee members also encouraged attendance at this year's DMA List Vision conference, Aug. 4 at Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York, as well as at the 2005 List Leader of the Year dinner the night before honoring Deb Goldstein, president of IDG List Services.

The meeting concluded with Ken Ebeling, vice president of membership development at the DMA, touting the importance of industry participation in the DMA and its councils.
