DMA Lays Off More Employees

The Direct Marketing Association confirmed that it has conducted another round of layoffs.


Christina Duffney, a DMA spokeswoman would not confirm the number but said that "it was less than last time."


This is the third round of layoffs at the DMA in the past six months. In October, the New York-based association laid off 19 people, or about 10 percent of its staff. The across-the-board cuts were a result of the economic downturn, which was exacerbated by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The organization also laid off 14 employees in late May, mainly involved in seminars.


Duffney said the layoffs this time were part of a larger, continuing reorganization to improve efficiency.


Duffney said the association's busy season is the period leading up to the DMA's annual fall conference, which took place last month in Chicago, "and some of the positions were related to the annual conference, but they were not people we hired for the annual conference."


The DMA employs about 170 people.
