The U.S. Postal Service, Washington, yesterday said eBay's auction Web site will begin offering collectible stamps next month.

The online sale, scheduled for July 7-16, will consist of more than 40 limited-edition stamps that are framed and numbered. The event will kick off World Stamp Expo 2000, in Anaheim, CA, which runs at the same time.

"Stamps are miniature works of art, and we believe this event will not only showcase our stamp program but draw attention to World Stamp Expo, where the actual pieces will be displayed," said John Nolan, USPS' deputy postmaster general

All items can be previewed online beginning Monday on both www.usps.com and www.ebay.com. Highlights of the offerings include:

* a full press sheet of Marilyn Monroe stamps signed by the stamp designer;

* a full press sheet of James Dean stamps signed by the stamp designer;

* an enlargement of the Supersonic Flight stamp image with a plate of four stamps, signed by Chuck Yeager;

* two Star Trek stamp cachets signed by Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner.

Brian Swette, chief operating officer, eBay, Santa Clara, CA, said, "Stamp collecting is a very popular activity on eBay, and this exclusive sale provides an opportunity for everyone to get involved, from the serious philatelic enthusiast to the novice stamp collector."
