USPS redesigns Web site

The US Postal Service has unveiled a new Web site design, featuring easier navigation for customers and a simplified layout.

One aspect of the new layout was an attempt to provide easier links to the most used USPS services, such as online shipping, package pickup, shipping supplies, and printing shipping labels, said USPS spokesman Michael Woods. He added that the redesign, which launched September 15, is the first phase of an ongoing USPS effort to continue to streamline its Web site.

“The goal is to be one of the most visited government Web sites and one of the best Web sites in the nation,” he said. “We cleaned up some of the clutter, so some of those popular services stand out.”

The Postal Service estimates its Web site averages more than 386 million visitors each year and close to 1.2 million visitors each day.

In addition to the cleaner design, the USPS said it wanted to graphically highlight the most popular product and service offerings to help customers more easily navigate the site.

“We focused on ease of navigation and simplicity,” Woods said.

The USPS said the redesign was done as a result of customer satisfaction surveys as well as usage metrics indicating the products and services customers visiting the usps.com used most.

Before the redesign, the Postal Service's Web site ranked fourth among all government agencies, according to an August report from the Brookings Institution that ranked 61 government sites based on how well those sites use interactive features to engage the public and provide services.
