*USPS' BOG Names Deputy Postmaster General

United States Postal Service's Board of Governors chairman Einar Dyhrkopp and Postmaster General William J. Henderson yesterday announced the appointment of John Nolan as Deputy Postmaster General of the agency.


Nolan is a 19-year veteran of the USPS, who, for the past 10 years, served as director of operations at Merrill Lynch Production Technologies, a division of Merrill Lynch & Company in Piscataway, N.J. When Nolan left the Postal Service in 1989, he was Postmaster and General Manager of the New York City Post Office, the world's largest, with annual revenues of $1 billion, operating expenses of $900 million, 25,000 employees and an annual volume of 4.5 billion pieces of mail.


As NYC Postmaster, Nolan improved service and productivity; and exceeded safety performance and budget goals. Most significantly, he made dramatic improvements in labor-management relations that enabled smooth implementation of automated operations, operations changes and manpower reduction.


"John's extensive knowledge and experience as a 19-year veteran of the Postal Service positions him exceptionally well to lead the agency forward into the 21st century," said Henderson.


Henderson also noted that Nolan understands customer mailing requirements and that his perspective will benefit the Postal Service in its customer relations.


The DPMG is a member of the Postal Service Board of Governors, and is the second-highest executive position. Three senior vice presidents


report directly to the Deputy, including chief technology officer, chief marketing officer and the senior vice president for corporate/business Development. These functions encompass ecommerce, strategic marketing, product design and production, retail and international business, information technologies and the information platform.
