USPS Begins Premium Forwarding Test

The U.S. Postal Service began a nationwide, two-year experiment last week for its Premium Forwarding Service.

The test aims to measure interest in this new personalized service that ships mail to residential customers who are away from their main address for at least two weeks and up to one year, such as those who own seasonal residences.

The service also could be used by those who do a lot of business travel, have temporary work assignments, are attending college or are being relocated. PFS is designed for residential customers who want to get all of their mail at a temporary address, including a post office box, regardless of the distance.

"Customers won't have to wait for correspondence and favorite magazines until they return home," said Nick Barranca, USPS vice president of product development. "Premium Forwarding gives customers one more way to enjoy their mail in a timely manner."

PFS provides a shipment of a customer's mail every Wednesday from his or her main address to the temporary address by Priority Mail service. Customers pay an initial $10 enrollment fee plus a weekly per-shipment charge of $10.

This differs from the postal service's Temporary Forwarding, which forwards certain types of mail to a temporary address on a piece-by-piece basis; and Hold Mail, under which all mail for an entire household can be held at the post office for up to 30 days. These services still are available at no charge.

PFS is available only for domestic mail. The USPS Board of Governors approved the experiment May 10.
