Commercial printer Transcontinental opened a 28,000-square-foot printing plant yesterday in Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island.

The plant's primary job will be to print the National Post newspaper in Canada's Maritime provinces, as well as two dailies, the Summerside Journal-Pioneer and The Charlottetown Guardian, which Transcontinental bought in 2002 from CanWest, an international media company and the largest publisher of newspapers in Canada.

Both the Journal-Pioneer and Guardian are in Prince Edward Island.

The plant also will assume commercial printing duties for customers of Williams & Crue, a print company acquired by Transcontinental in 2002.

The new plant will operate under the name Transcontinental Prince Edward Island. Transcontinental, based in Montreal, invested $3 million Canadian, or about $2.2 million U.S. Transcontinental operates 14 newspaper printing facilities across Canada.
