Study: Latin American E-Tailing to Hit $1.28B in '01

A recent study by Visa International and Boston Consulting Group projects that online retailing in Latin America will reach $1.28 billion by the end of the year, more than double the $540 million spent online in 2000.


Brazil leads the region in online retailing, with $906 million in revenue expected for 2001. Rounding out the top four Latin American markets are Mexico, with $134 million in online revenue, Argentina with $119 million and Chile with $45 million.


The study also noted that the largest online category is automotive, with direct sales likely to reach $504 million in 2001. Consumer auctions is the next largest category with $203 million, followed by travel with revenue of $140 million and computer hardware and software with $139 million.
