PRC Backs Premium Forwarding Service

The Postal Rate Commission recommended that the U.S. Postal Service proceed with a two-year experimental program aimed at getting mail forwarded more quickly to customers' temporary addresses, according to documents released by the PRC April 15.

Premium Forwarding Service would send a customer's mail to a temporary address once each week via Priority Mail. The service is aimed at customers who relocate for significant periods of time, such as those who own seasonal residences.

The cost would include a $10 enrollment fee plus $10 per weekly shipment. The USPS Board of Governors may consider the PRC's recommendation at its meeting next month, the date of which has not been announced.

The $10 weekly shipment fee is a fixed rate involving $7.15 for postage and $2.85 for repackaging. The USPS currently offers Temporary Forwarding, which forwards certain types of mail to a temporary address on a piece-by-piece basis, and Hold Mail, under which all mail for an entire household can be held at the post office for up to 30 days.
