Open session of USPS BOG set for August 5

An open session of the US Postal Service's Board of Governors will be held August 5 at USPS Headquarters in Washington, DC. Under discussion will be the latest financial and service performance of the agency.

According to the Mailing & Fulfillment Service Association, marketing mail volume is down 22% compared with last year, and correspondence and transaction mail have faced a similar drop. At the end of its second financial quarter, the USPS reported a net loss of $707 million. This follows a $2.8 billion loss in 2008.

Another event this month hosted by the Mailers' Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC) is set to address the same issue, as well as some of the current proposals that might provide relief, including consolidating branches and the topic of funding future retirees' health benefits. The four-day meeting will take place from August 11 through August 13 in Washington, DC, also at Postal Service headquarters. Sam Pulcrano, VP of sustainability at the USPS, will be discussing the five-day delivery plan at that event.

Also to be discussed at the MTAC meetings are Intelligent Mail Barcode and growth initiatives for various mail service types.
