USPS Standard Mail Load Leveling Begins

Mailers that qualify for a Destination Sectional Center Facility (DSCF) discounted rate now have to adjust to the new U.S Postal Service load-leveling plan, which began today.

Under the plan, Standard Mail accepted on Friday will not be delivered until Tuesday, and mail accepted on Saturday will have a promised delivery day of Wednesday. In other words, the Postal Service is extending what was a three-day delivery expectation to a four-day delivery expectation. This change is designed to allow a more balanced distribution of DSCF Standard Mail across delivery days.

The load-leveling plan will not affect the current service standards for First-Class Mail or Periodicals.

The Postal Regulatory Commission had made several recommendations regarding the change for the USPS to consider prior to making these adjustments to it service. “The Postal Service has been making many changes to save costs over the last few years. To make sure it meets its service obligation, we had to raise the point that it's difficult to maintain service when making so many changes all at once,” PRC Chairman Ruth Goldway had said previously when issuing its opinion on the change. “They're trying to do a good job.”
