Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE), co-author of the proposed Postal Reform Act, issued a statement today hailing the U.S. Postal Service's agreement to make Sunday deliveries to Amazon Prime members as an example of the “innovative solutions the agency needs to survive and thrive in the 21st Century.”

Among other things, the bill written by Carper and Sen. Tom Coburn seeks to empower the Postal Service to act more like a business to deal with competitive pressures in the marketplace, and would grant the agency such free market privileges as the ability to set its own rates.

Carper said he hoped the Amazon deal “might encourage other companies to pursue similar agreements with the Postal Service. Ultimately, Congress must give the Postal Service the tools, resources, and flexibility it needs so it can right its financial ship and continue to implement forward-thinking ideas like this one.”

Amazon announced yesterday it had entered into an exclusive arrangement with the Postal Service to deliver packages on Sundays beginning this week.
