Holiday Deliveries Impacted by Weather

United Parcel Service Inc. said holiday packages delayed by inclement weather were arriving at their final destinations yesterday ater the company stopped deliveries during the Christmas weekend.

Snowstorms and freezing rain in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee hampered operations of the nation's largest package shippers, including UPS, FedEx Corp., the U.S. Postal Service and DHL.

Parts of Indiana received nearly 20 inches of snow while much of northern Kentucky saw more than a foot. Also, much of western Tennessee was covered in ice.

Delivery trucks were stuck and planes filled with cargo were stranded at airports.

The storm hit shippers at their hubs late at night on Dec. 23, the most crucial time for moving packages across the country. FedEx, Memphis, operates hubs in Indianapolis and Memphis while UPS dispatches its fleet of planes from Louisville, KY. DHL, Plantation, FL, has national hubs at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport and in Wilmington, OH.

The number of packages not delivered by Christmas Day "was significant," said a UPS spokeswoman.

In a statement on its Web site dated Dec. 25, UPS, Atlanta, said it did not deliver any packages on Christmas Day or Dec. 26 and planned to deliver "as many of these packages as possible when UPS delivery resumes on Dec. 27."

FedEx also did not deliver packages during the Christmas weekend.

In a Dec. 23 statement on DHL's Web site, the company said "some shipments may experience delays of [24] to [48] hours."

The statement also said "we can no longer guarantee that packages traveling through the Ohio Valley today will arrive in time for the Christmas holiday."

UPS, FedEx and the USPS also said they would not offer money-back guarantees for late deliveries caused by the inclement weather.
