General Dynamics Robotic Systems has been awarded $40 million as a subcontractor to Northrop Grumman Corporation for work on the US Postal Service's Flats Sequencing System program.

“We're excited because we're continuing to work with the United States Postal Service,” said Rae Higgins, communication specialist for General Dynamics Robotic Systems, which is based in Westminster, MD.

As a subcontractor, General Dynamics Robotic Systems will manufacture the following components of the systems: the automatic bundle separation unit, the bundle distribution conveyor and the in-feed modules. The company is contracted to deliver 102 of each of these components.

The company made the announcement on December 13.

In March of 2007, Northrop Grumman announced that it had been awarded a $874.6 million fixed-price contract from the US Postal Service to provide 100 Flats Sequencing Systems.

The Flats Sequencing System program is designed to further automate the US Postal Service's sorting of flat mail, which includes large envelopes, catalogs, magazines, and newspapers. The processing, sorting, and delivery of flat mail can be labor-intensive due to its varying size and thickness. The US Postal Service has said that it plans to install the first Flats Sequencing Systems in 2008.

General Dynamics Robotic Systems is a designer and manufacturer of complex electro-mechanical and advanced automated systems for military, government, and commercial clients.
