Corcoran Retires; New Postal Inspector General Named

The U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors has selected David Williams, previously inspector general at four other federal agencies, to replace embattled USPS inspector general Karla Corcoran.

Corcoran, the postal service's first inspector general, whom the governors appointed in 1996 when the office was created, retired "immediately and will do so with the thanks of the governors for her service," the USPS said in a statement late Aug. 19. Reports of waste of public money under Corcoran, mostly involving team-building exercises in which the office's staff engaged, preceded her departure.

Williams, who took over the office immediately, has served as inspector general at the Internal Revenue Service, Treasury Department, Social Security Administration and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Congress created the office of postal inspector general to provide independent investigation of allegations of fraud, waste and abuse at the USPS.
