American City Business Journals Inc. has bought Hemmings Motor News three months after the death of the car collector magazine's publisher and editor, Terry Ehrich.

The sale covers the flagship monthly title,, two smaller magazines and the databases. It also includes a unit that publishes books, calendars and other items featuring old cars.

American City, Charlotte, NC, and the Ehrich family will close the deal by May 1. Terms were not disclosed.

American City, an Advance Publications company, claims to be the leading publisher of metropolitan business journals, with 41 such titles. It also publishes two NASCAR magazines and five sports annuals. Advance Publications, which owns Conde Nast, bought American City in 1995.

Hemmings, with a circulation of 223,000, serves collectors of antique, special interest and vintage cars. The monthly runs 650 to 750 pages of ads on collector cars and parts, restoration services and tools, car shows and rallies, and literature. All ads run on as well.

Ehrich ran Hemmings for 33 years. The company has 115 employees. It will continue to be based in Bennington, VT.
