Women Still Outspend Men Online

Greenfield Online's recent Digital Consumer Shopping Index study found that during the first quarter women purchased online at a higher rate than men for the fourth consecutive quarter.

The survey of 3,000 Internet shoppers also showed that upper-income viewers purchased more than those with incomes of less than $50,000. More than 80 percent of those surveyed with incomes more than $75,000 had purchased something via the Web in the first quarter.

The report listed books, compact discs, apparel, computer software and airline tickets as the top five online retail categories for the first quarter. Airline tickets regained the fifth spot after falling to sixth during the holiday season, when toy purchases ballooned and took over the No. 5 ranking.
