The Washington Post Co. named Caroline Little as the new chief executive and publisher of its online unit this week, replacing Christopher Schroeder.

Little takes the reins at WashingtonPost.Newsweek Interactive after nearly a year as president and three years prior to that as chief operating officer. She joined WPNI in 1997 as general counsel. Little, 44, has a long background in publishing and law. She has served as general counsel at U.S. News & World Report, The Atlantic Monthly and Fast Company.

In a statement, Washington Post Co. chairman Donald Graham said Little "has what it takes to run any company -- brains, principles, decisiveness and good business judgment."

Schroeder, 39, moves over to the newspaper company side as vice president of strategy after four years at the helm of WPNI, which manages the Web sites for The Washington Post and Newsweek. In that time, washingtonpost.com has grown into one of the top news sites on the Internet, ranking No. 12 in the news category in the most recent Nielsen//NetRatings rankings with 5.2 million unique users in November.

Though not profitable, WPNI has consistently grown revenue, recording 32 percent higher sales in the most recent quarter compared with a year earlier.

"Chris has led WPNI ably through a crucial phase of its development," Graham said. "Under him, WPNI met its financial goals and exceeded our hopes for its pace of growth."
