Toxic sweets are going green

In celebration of International Earth Day 2007, novelty candy marketer Candy Dynamics is hosting its inaugural Toxic Takedown Challenge.

The Challenge promotes environmental awareness for kids and encourages them to pay tribute to the environment by actively participating in Earth Day festivities.

"Toxic Waste is a very environmentally conscious brand and the actual candy was developed with a story that talks about trying to fight toxic waste and the enemies of our planet," said Steven Style, a spokesman for Candy Dynamics. "As a part of this, we are doing the Toxic Takedown promotion to promote awareness to kids and teach them how they can help the environment."

From March 20 to April 30, the public is invited to visit to enter a drawing for a chance to win Toxic Waste candy and a $500 U.S. EE Series Savings Bond. Participants are asked to fill out an entry form and submit a tip or creative idea about what people can do to help the planet and the environment.

The grand prize winner will be awarded a week's supply of Toxic Waste candy and the Savings Bond, and 25 runner-up contestants will win Toxic Waste candy. Winning entries will be posted on the Toxic Waste Web site.

Suggestions for how to help the environment include replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, which reduce electricity used and last longer than traditional bulbs; installing low-flow showerheads and faucets; and turning down the hot water heater to 120°F which will reduce electricity use and costs.

Candy Dynamics recently released new candy, including the Sour Blue Raspberry and Sour Cherry flavors to its Toxic Waste Nuclear Sludge Chew Bar line, as well as a Toxic Waste Sour Candy Spray, a liquid sour candy and finger puppet toy. These new products join Candy Dynamics' flagship product Toxic Waste Hazardously Sour Candy, ultra-sour hard candies that come packaged in a novelty toy toxic waste drum. Packaging is made from recycled materials.

The Toxic Takedown Challenge promotion will continue in a summer-camp campaign that will be led by female pop group The Genz. When the group visits a number of camps across the country this summer, they will invite kids to make suggestions about how to help the environment.

"We hope that it will not only create action but will [also] help kick people into action," Mr. Style said.
