MusicMatch Inc. Tuesday announced the beta version of its Jukebox for Linux software, which allows sites to offer viewers the ability to download MP3 audio files on Linux programs.

Prior to the announcement, the software was only compatible with Windows and Macintosh programs. The Linux application is expected to officially hit the market sometime after Jan. 1. According to the firm, it will be offered to existing and potential e-commerce affiliates.

MusicMatch, San Diego, has more than 20 affiliates, including ZDNet.com, CNET.com and MP3.com, that use the Mac and Windows versions of the program. The firm claims that 12 million unique users have downloaded the feature at the affiliate sites.

Jukebox for Linux allows Web viewers to:

• Play MP3 and WAV files and organize digital music collections as well as tag tracks with album art, artist bios and liner notes.

• Create high-quality MP3s by moving songs from CDs, cassette tapes and vinyl collections to the desktop.

• Record custom mix CDs.

MusicMatch worked with software firm CodeWeavers Inc., St. Paul, MN, to complete the Linux platform.

Sites can offer their viewers the standard Jukebox for Linux version for free. However, MusicMatch signs varying sales percentage deals for sites that want to offer Jukebox Linux Plus, which also runs video and will be available shortly after the standard version.

The company is currently offering a free trial of the beta product to Web marketers and general viewers at www.musicmatch.com in order to gain feedback for final product touch-ups. More information can be found at the site.
