MSN Provides Search, Virtual Earth APIs

New applications of MSN Search and MSN Virtual Earth made available to Web publishers this week include added options for advertisers.

MSN is offering Web sites an upgraded application program interface for MSN search, letting them incorporate MSN Search into their sites for free. Each API can conduct up to 10,000 queries a day for free.

In addition, businesses and developers now can access the API for the MSN Virtual Earth beta for commercial use.

"The no-charge availability of MSN Virtual Earth with geographical local search capabilities create a more cost-effective means for developers and business people ... to provide new services for their customers," according to a statement from MSN.

Through the MSN Virtual Earth API, businesses also can generate revenue by placing ads on their sites in a revenue-sharing model that will be available next year. Advertisers that choose not to use Virtual Earth's geographical local search capabilities or ads sign a service agreement with MSN.

The APIs include MapPoint Web Service, which covers 26 countries and real-time traffic accident coverage.
