More Thoughts About 20-Somethings

I was scanning a recent issue of your publication and couldn't help but read the Letters to the Editor that contained a retort from Jason Goodman.

The subject was one of my favorites -- 20-somethings. I'm in between 20-something and 50-something and have worked with quite a few youngsters such as Goodman.

He's right. They're not all jerks. Most are invigorating, creative, hardworking, ambitious and great fun to work with. Others are immature, unprofessional, looking for a shortcut, arrogant and suffering from a severe lack of respect for anyone's ideas but their own -- just like the rest of us!

If they are different in any way, it's that they were growing up when their parents suffered the big corporate downsizing of the early '80s and decided, wisely, that loyalty to one's employer is not a two-way street.

Sadly, however, Goodman's unrefined vitriol and downright nasty insults are indicative of the latter type of 20-something. Ken Magill does not need to editorialize any further on the subject, as the printing of Goodman's letter alone proved Magill's point.
