The U.S. Internet economy generated $830 billion in revenues last year, representing 58 percent growth from the previous year, according to a study commissioned by Cisco Systems Inc.

Internet companies employed about 3.1 million workers at midyear, with 33 percent in sales and marketing. The study did caution that the number of Internet employees has fallen since then as the economy, particularly, the Internet sector slows.

Infrastructure companies such as Cisco, which took in an estimated $18.9 billion last year, claimed the largest share of revenue. The Internet economy represents just 2 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product, according to the study.

Dot-com companies represented just 10 percent of the Internet revenue pie.
