Goodlatte: Internet Tax Moratorium Clock Keeps Ticking

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) told attendees at the 2002 Annual Government Affairs Conference here yesterday that direct marketers and Congress must begin gearing up for the next steps on the Internet taxation issue.

Goodlatte, who is co-chairman of the Congressional Internet Caucus, was critical in the passage of the Internet Tax Freedom Act and the Internet Tax moratorium extension last fall. That decision extends the moratorium on new and discriminatory Internet taxes until November 2003.

The Internet Tax Freedom Act, passed in 1998, expired Oct. 21 when lawmakers could not agree whether to include a provision that would encourage states to simplify sales tax collection in their estimated 7,600 jurisdictions.

"The clock is ticking away on the two-year extension that we achieved last year, so we and you need to be fashioning a plan right now about how to address this issue," Goodlatte said.

Goodlatte, who is a member of the House Judiciary Committee, which has jurisdiction over much of the privacy legislation before the House, also discussed current privacy and spam legislation.
