Dell, Sendmail Team Up to Offer E-Mail Hosting To Enterprises

Dell Computer Corp. and Internet messaging services provider Sendmail Inc. have teamed up to build a special purpose e-mail server using the Linux operating system from Red Hat Corp.


Specific financial terms were not disclosed yesterday.


Under terms of the deal, Dell, Round Rock, Texas plans to sell three versions of its two-processor PowerEdge 2450 server with the e-mail software pre-installed later in the first quarter of this year. Sendmail, Emeryville, CA, will get part of the revenue from each server sale.


Dell said it will offer a pre-configured server that can support up to 4,000 mailboxes, one supporting 8,000 mailboxes and one supporting 15,000 mailboxes.


Sendmail's Advanced Messaging Server e-mail hosting software is built on Red Hat Linux and is aimed at small- to mid-sized Internet service providers and businesses seeking to host their own e-mail systems.
