Cornhuskers, Foxsports.com Team Up for First Major College Football Webcast

The University of Nebraska football team's Sept. 2 home game against San Jose State University will be webcast at Foxsports.com, marking the first live Internet coverage of a Division I college football game.

The agreement between the school and the Web site was sparked after TV networks failed to pick up the game, which will be the only Cornhuskers matchup not expected to be televised this fall.

The University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE, also cited its team's loyal national fan base as a reason the deal came together. According to a prepared release, the athletic department's renamed Web site -- Husker.com -- recorded a season-high 313,000 page views during the week of its game against Southern Mississippi, the only Nebraska game not televised in 1999.

In March, Nebraska athletic director Bill Byrne expressed disappointment in the lack of webcast issues that were addressed in new television contracts that his university's athletic conference, the Big 12, signed with ABC Sports. The time of the San Jose State game was moved up an hour from 1:30 p.m. EST to 12:30, partly to sidestep those conference contractual obligations.

Nebraska's video staff, which normally records each play for big-screen replays during home games, will provide footage of the game. The webcast will use the university's regular radio broadcast, and live video will also be available at the school's official team site Husker.com.

Viewers at both the Nebraska and Fox sites will be instructed on downloading software to watch the game. Financial terms between Foxsports.com, Los Angeles, and the university were not disclosed.
