Consumers Turn to Traditional Retailers Online in Holiday Week Three

Traditional offline retailers comprise eight of the 10 fastest-growing and most visited retail sites this holiday season, according to a study by measurement firm Media Metrix.

The Media Metrix Online Shopping Index aggregates home and work visitors to nearly 400 retail sites and 18 retail subcategories. The index grew 27.5 percent to 34.9 million unique visitors for week three of the 2000 holiday shopping season versus 27.4 million in the same week last year.

This year's findings indicate that as the holiday season closes, consumers are turning to familiar brands with an offline provenance, Media Metrix said. These multichannel retailers are particularly favored for apparel, furniture, health and beauty products and housewares -- items that are non-standardized and not one-size-fits-all.

Overall, the four leading retail sites for the week ending Dec. 10 were,, and -- sites that maintained their rankings from the prior week. In the same list, Wal-Mart moved up to No. 5 from No. 8 in the previous week.

Books regained the top spot among retail subcategories for the third week of the holiday shopping season, bypassing computers, which had the No. 1 position in the previous week with 2.4 million average daily unique visitors.
