AOL: Suing Bulk E-Mailers Not Hypocritical

America Online does not think its practice of suing unsolicited bulk e-mail marketers while it allows merchants to pitch AOL members through electronic pop-up or "splash page" advertising as they log onto the service is hypocritical, said spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg.

"These [offers] are values that AOL has screened," she said. "Our members can find them nowhere else, and they have told us they appreciate hearing about them."

By suing spammers, Goldberg said, AOL also protects its members from pornography. Members can opt out of all splash-page marketing by going to keyword "marketing preferences."

On Jan. 7, AOL announced that it had filed suit against three companies seeking to stop them from sending unsolicited e-mail to its members.
