Betting Service Goes Wireless

US Off-Track, a Web firm targeting horse and greyhound race bettors, announced its wireless betting service yesterday.

Racing commissions for slightly less than half of U.S. states have approved wireless betting, and the service is only available in those states. Alabama and Massachusetts allow wireless betting, for example, while Georgia and New York do not.

In approved states, people who sign up for a free account at www.usofftrack.com can place bets and check their accounts with devices such as Internet-enabled cell phones and personal digital assistants. Racing odds will appear as they do at racetracks or off-track businesses.

US Off-Track, Portland, OR, plans to push the wireless service in upcoming banner ads at numerous racing Web sites. The company also will run print ads in the Daily Racing Form, a publication that covers horseracing results and previews for major tracks.

After signing deals with racetracks, US Off-Track takes a split of bets posted via its services. The firm also generates ad revenue at its site.
