DHL Plans Large NYC Center for May

DHL plans to build its largest U.S. service center in New York City, the company said yesterday.

The $181 million investment will consolidate two existing locations into a new 161,125-square-foot facility to serve Manhattan pickup, delivery and sorting operations. Throughput capacity will rise from 10,000 pieces per hour to 15,000.

The state-of-the-art facility at 500 10th Ave. will handle domestic and international parcels as well as palletized and container freight, DHL said. It also will accommodate unloading and loading of loose-loaded trailers.

Construction begins in February. When fully operational in May, it will employ 400 people and operate 24 hours a day Monday-Friday and until 6 p.m. on Saturdays.
