Express delivery and logistics company DHL has invested $7.8 million in a new regional sort center in Bloomington, MN.

The Plantation, FL-based DHL facility will serve DHL's air and ground network in the Midwest.

The new facility relocates DHL from a 35,000-sq.-ft. facility in Blaine, MN, to one more than double its size to meet its current and future needs.

The 79,049-sq.-ft. regional sort center will provide one-day ground service for letters and parcels across Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin, Iowa, and North Dakota and South Dakota. The regional sort center is also strategically located closer to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport for connection to the DHL air network and is fully interconnected with DHL's nationwide regional ground sort center network.

Key customer benefits include a new high-speed singulator for optimum package visibility through the enhanced scanning system's track-and-trace features. With the transition to the new sort system, package throughput will more than double for processing more packages per hour at the new facility.

The new Minneapolis regional sort center investment is one of many initiatives that DHL has undertaken to improve US network efficiencies and connectivity systemwide. DHL has recently enhanced its presence in cities across the country through new facilities in New York City; Chicago; Charlotte, NC; Salt Lake City; Charleston, SC; White River Junction, VT; and Atlanta and Columbus, OH.

DHL also recently completed a $1.2 billion build out of its US domestic network and infrastructure, including an expanded primary air and ground hub in Wilmington, OH, seven new regional sort centers throughout the country and the development of new, state-of-the-art distribution facilities for the east and west coasts in Allentown, PA, and Riverside, CA.
