Deutsche Post Buys Italian Parcel Firm

Deutsche Post World Net confirmed yesterday that it will take over Italian parcel service company Casa di Spedizioni Ascoli S.p.A on Jan. 15 in an effort to expand into southern Europe.

They are "particularly strong in heavy, palletized parcel logistics, which we find very attractive and a complement to our Danzas partial load business in Europe," DPWN spokesman Norman Scherstrom said.

Scherstrom said the company has 70 hubs and depots, 1,000 vehicles, 400 employees and 1,200 partners. It does 20,000 shipments a day with more than 10,000 customers. It has 80 million euros ($84.30 million) in annual sales.

The company will be integrated into Deutsche Post World Net's express unit DHL. This year, DPWN is merging its Euro Express division, DHL and Danzas Euro cargo divisions to create a single European parcel and express presence under the DHL brand.
