Red Cross Launches Online Disaster Survivor Network

The American Red Cross has started a Web page dedicated to uniting families with survivors of last week's terrorist attacks.

The site, Family Registration Web, lets survivors of the attacks provide information to the Red Cross concerning their safety and whereabouts.

Family members or friends searching for a loved one can contact their local Red Cross chapter to submit the name of the missing person.

The Red Cross then matches the inquiries with the registered survivors and lets the family member or friend know if the person has registered with them. It also notifies the survivor of the inquiry.

No personal information is shared from the registrations, the Red Cross said.

Microsoft helped develop this Web-based matching service as part of its pledged donation of $5 million in technology to the Red Cross.

In addition, Compaq Computer Corp. will set up computer kiosks in New York and Washington to help individuals in these areas reach loved ones nationwide. Aside from the kiosks, Compaq donated a $500,000 technology grant to the American Red Cross of Greater New York.
