Clues as to where Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV's (D-WV) investigation of the data broker industry may be heading will find the light of day on December 18 in a hearing of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

Information and marketing services industry insiders fear that Rockefeller might introduce legislation this year further regulating data collection and usage. Rockefeller, who chairs the committee, has spearheaded a year-long examination of how data brokers collect, compile, and sell consumer information. Through his committee, he issued information requests to nine representative data brokers, as well as 12 health, personal finance, and family focused websites.

Testifying before the hearing, which may be viewed via webcast on www.commerce.senate.gov beginning at 2:30, will be:

  • Jerry Cerasale, SVP of Government Affairs and Public Policy, Direct Marketing Association
  • Tony Hadley, SVP of Government Affairs, Experian
  • Jessica Rich, Director, Bureau of Consumer Protection, Federal Trade Commission
  • Pam Dixon, Executive Director, World Privacy Forum
  • Dr. Joseph Turow, Professor of Communication, University of Southern California
